Character Information

General
Canon Source: The Picture of Dorian Gray
Canon Format: The novel by Oscar Wilde only, not a film version or the Alan Moore version
Character's Name: Dorian Gray
Character's Age: 39, outwardly appears to be 20
Conditional: If your character is 13 years of age or under, please clarify how they will be played. N/A
What form will your character's NV take? Dorian’s NV is a silver cigarette case with his initials engraved elaborately on the front. When open, one side of the case functions as the NV, the other side contains the image of his portrait in miniature. It reflects all changes the portrait goes through.

Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Dorian has no exceptional physical abilities, as far as strength, agility, speed etc. go. He has the normal strength, speed, agility, healing ability etc. of a normal 20 year old man. The thing is, Dorian is almost forty.
Dorian possesses a portrait that ages instead of him. Not only does it reflect the effects of time and aging on his features, it also reflects evil in his soul. Cruelty and lewd excesses also make the portrait older and uglier.
The portrait preserves Dorian’s youth and beauty. As long as the portrait remains intact, Dorian’s physical body remains unchanged from that of a young, healthy twenty year old no matter what he does. Injuries heal without scars or disfigurement, and while he’s not immune from illness he is immune from long term from damage from them. He can even eat what he likes and not gain weight.
However, it does not grant him immortality. He may live indefinitely if he manages to avoid injury or illness severe enough to kill him, but he is as easy to kill and injure as any other human. His portrait seems to contain Dorian’s soul, so if the portrait is destroyed Dorian will die. And yes, unlike his portrayal in a certain adaptation, Dorian can look at his portrait. In fact, he quite likes looking at it and does so frequently.

Conditional: If your character has no superhuman canon abilities, what dormant ability will you give them? N/A

Weapons: I’m giving Dorian a small-caliber Victorian-era hand pistol. It’s reasonable within the context of canon to believe that he’d have easy access to one.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: Dorian’s mother was a beautiful young woman from a wealthy family. She had many wealthy suitors, but she fell in love with an impoverished solder and married him. He was killed in a duel shortly after they were married, and his grief-stricken mother lived just long enough to deliver Dorian before dying of a broken heart, in that oh-so Victorian way. Dorian was raised by his maternal grandfather, who was described as a cold and loveless old man.
When Dorian was twenty years old, he had a portrait of himself painted by an artist named Basil Hallward. Basil’s portrait was a reflection of his adoration of Dorian and his exceptional beauty. Upon seeing the painting, Dorian became fascinated, realizing for the first time the extent of his physical beauty. Basil’s friend Lord Henry lectured Dorian on the importance of youth and beauty. Dorian becomes intensely jealous of his portrait, and says a passionate prayer that he and the portrait would change places. That the portrait would age, and he would always remain the same.
Dorian’s new vanity lead to a feeling of superiority, and a new cruelty found Dorian. The cruelty lead to the suicide of a beautiful young actress named Sybil Vane, who Dorian had a relationship with. The portrait’s expression changed to one of cruelty, and Dorian knew that his prayer had been answered.
Using a mysterious and unnamed book that was given to him by Lord Henry as a inspiration and a template, Dorian embarks on a life of hedonism and thrill seeking, looking for new pleasures and new experiences wherever he can find them. The portrait reflects all of his sins, becoming uglier and more twisted.
Dorian comes to believe that the portrait is a reflection of his own soul.

Point in Canon: One day, while Basil was visiting, Dorian shows the twisted painting to him. Overcome with anger at Basil for painting the portrait that started him down his life path, and with disgust as Basil attempts to pray for the salvation of Dorian’s soul, Dorian stabs Basil in the neck, killing him.
With Basil’s corpse locked in the attic with the portrait, Dorian paces the floor while waiting anxiously for a response from someone he thinks can help him dispose of the body. Wilde describes time going slower and slower, and finally stopping completely before he gets the answer he requested.
The trip to Siren’s Port will take place in that frozen moment.

Conditional: Brief summary of previous RP history: N/A

Character Personality: Dorian knows full well that he is beautiful. He also knows how powerful beauty can be when dealing with other people. Even when he doesn’t intend to do it, Dorian will use his beauty to manipulate people. It’s something he is very adept at making full use of, given the fact that he stopped aging when he was 20, and has had years to protect the craft. Moreover, Dorian frequently seems to believe that his beauty not only gives him the power, but the right to control others and get what he wants. To him, beauty is the only real virtue, and he will always consider himself greater than people who do not have it.
Dorian has learned that if you are rich, you can get away with anything. And, if you are beautiful, most people will give you the benefit of the doubt and generally believe the best of you. Sin imprints itself on the face, and to have a spotless face is to always be blameless. It's that Victorian ideal that manners matter more than morals, and that appearances matter more than reality. Between his looks and his money, Dorian can quite literally get away with murder. Moreover, he knows this.
Being a sociopath and not a psychopath, Dorian really doesn’t hurt people recreationally. He doesn’t get any pleasure from it. However, if killing someone will benefit him, he can and will do so readily. Remorse for his actions is not unheard of. However, it's usually more tied in with the need to suffer the consequences for his actions, than of what he did. Now and again, the urge to reform will overtake him. These are usually short lived when they do not achieve immediate changes to his portrait. They’re also usually just another pose, or another mode of life he wants to try out. Dorian lives for new experience, and ‘goodness’, when he desires it, is usually just one more.
Dorian seeks to live in a state of pleasure and luxury at all times. More than anything, he lives for new experiences. He will do anything, and try anything, just for the experience. He’s fascinated with sensations. Sexually, he has no real limits. Any gender, any types of sex are open for him to try. He loves being in love, but for him it’s the state of being in love that he wants. The actual person is incidental and disposable, even if he's not consciously aware of it at the time. He changes lovers regularly.
Dorian loves beautiful clothes, works of art, music, and literature. He can be listless and lazy at times, and usually considers himself before others. If he doesn't, it's usually just because the idea of being a martyr sounds like a part he wants to play, a hat he wants to try on. Putting someone else’s needs before his own isn’t something that will occur to him naturally. While he can lavish generosity on friends, he shows them no loyalty.
Both the portrait and the book about hedonism have a powerful effect on Dorian. In Dorian’s mind, his beauty gives him superiority and entitlement, and his extended youth give him license to make whatever use of his beauty he wants. He's always looking for something new to do or be, and he comes to believe that these experiences are all there is of life. The portrait not only gives him the extended youth and beauty to try as many as he can, they give him mastery over the consequences. He does regard the painting as his soul. And, he regards it with both terror and wonderment.

Conditional: Personality development in previous game: N/A

Character Plans: I don’t know if this is a plan, but it’s something to consider. Dorian exists in Wilde’s world of late Victorian London. There will be a large amount of culture shock as he goes to modern day. Much of what Dorian has done is legitimately shocking. But, there is a portion of it, like homosexuality, that won’t shock or offend a majority of modern characters. This will surprise and confuse him, and give him an ironic prudishness at things like women in pants, and bare limbs. Dorian will also have a Victorian Londoner’s view of things like race, which could make him unintentionally offensive and lead to some interesting interactions. So, I think early story arcs will mostly involve him learning about 21th century society and adjusting to modern attitudes.

Appearance/PB: Dorian is physically very beautiful. His skin is pale, his eyes are blue, and his hair is in neat blonde waves. There’s a blush to his cheeks and lips. Height is on the tall end of average, with long, well turned limbs. Carrying himself as a true aristocrat, he’s definitely a figure to stand out in a crowd.
Being from the Victorian era, Dorian’s dress reflects that. His clothes are well tailored and elegant, and from the period. He’s always immaculately groomed and dressed, and he’s very proud of his impressive appearance.

Dorian's BP in icons is 20 year old Jude Law, in the movie "Wilde" where he played Dorian's author's handsome young paramour.

First Person Sample

[Dorian appears on the screen, his wide blue eyes searching for a moment, as if he’s trying to determine whether or not this is working. A noise in the background seems to startle him for a moment. He glances around skittishly, then turns his attention to the network device.]
Hello everyone. Frightfully bad weather we’re having. Isn’t it? You’ll forgive me if I’m still learning how to use this beastly thing. I’m told that while I can’t see you, all of you can see me… or you will… whenever you view this bloody thing. It sounds like a damned nuisance if you asked me.
So, this is the message. I’ve been stuck in the plainest of plain rooms, without so much as a footman to help me with my costume, and everyone here seems to be quite uncivilized. I haven’t even been able to get so much as a cup of tea from the staff here. If they were the staff… didn’t quite work that one out.
But, anyway, I was wondering. Is there any kind of social season here? If I’m stuck, I’d rather like to at least be stuck with some civilized people. Perhaps a dinner or a dance or even a hunt would be welcome. I shouldn’t mind an escort either, as I’m afraid this place is quite unfamiliar to me.
[He softens a little, and flashes a bright smile into the lenses.]
That is, if it isn’t too much trouble.

Third Person Sample

Dorian leaned forward in his chair. The squeak irritated him. For the life of him, he couldn’t work out why something as simple as a chair had to be made with wheels and springs and Christ knows what else. He fumbled with the lighter, and after a few tries got a flame. He brought it up to the cigarette in his mouth, and inhaled.
The taste was odd, but recognizable. There was a small comfort in the tobacco, the knowledge that not everything was completely different. The photographs in the magazine looked garishly back at him, in shiny bright colors that seemed too clear to be real. It struck him as vulgar.
Leaving the squeaky chair, he decided to go outside. The smells of a modern city still made him wrinkle his nose, but he was beginning to get used to it. He found he rather liked the smell of gasoline in some cases.
“We don’t advance. We just find more complicated ways to poison ourselves.” Dorian hissed through his teeth.
Suddenly, a muscular young man with dark skin walked past him. The weather was hot, and he was clad only in a pair of tight denim blue jeans. Dorian winced a little. Seeing nudity on a daily basis would take a lot of getting used to. He longed for the elegance of mystery. Then, he took another look.
“Well.” Dorian though. “Maybe it isn’t all bad.”
